The Mizab al-Rahma — the Spout of Mercy — pours water from the roof in a cascade of silver. The stone courses below are dark and wet. Rain falls through the frame. The Mizab al-Rahma — the Spout of Mercy — is a gold waterspout on the roof of the Ka'bah. When it rains, water pours from it directly onto the mataf, and pilgrims rush to stand beneath it. It is considered among the most blessed spots in the world to make dua. This painting captures it in the act — rain falling, the spout pouring, the water landing on the stone of Makkah and spreading across the marble.
The door of the Ka'bah is opened only twice a year, for
honoured guests. For every other pilgrim, it remains sealed — golden, inscribed, present, and beyond reach. This painting holds that tension without resolving it. The door fills the frame. The calligraphy of the Kiswah above it is rendered in full detail — lines of Quran woven in gold into black silk. The viewer stands as close as it is possible to stand, without entering. That is precisely where most pilgrims spend their lives.
